What we will not sell
Publishing the refusals is more useful than publishing the rates, because refusals are where a magazine like this one is actually decided.
Most publications describe what they sell. Fewer describe what they turn down, which is a shame, because the second list tells you far more. Here is ours. It is not a moral position about other people's business models. It is a description of what would break this particular magazine.
Anything attached to a product
No affiliate links. No commission on a sale. No sponsored articles, advertorial, branded content, native placements or paid inclusion in a piece of writing. No display advertising for cosmetics, supplements, devices or treatments. No gifted products in exchange for coverage, and no press trips. We make no product recommendations anywhere, which is stated on every article and is the reason an affiliate network has nothing here to attach itself to.
Clinical and treatment advertising
No listings, sponsorship or advertising from clinics, practitioners, aesthetic providers, dispensing pharmacies or anyone selling a procedure. This magazine writes about the history of substances people have put on themselves, including several that harmed them. Taking money from the current market in the same subject would make that history unreadable.
Position, ranking and emphasis
No paid position of any kind. Listings are alphabetical and stay alphabetical. There is no featured tier, no premium placement, no boosted entry, no home page slot for sale and no editor's choice. We do not sell a badge, a seal, a rating or an award, and we do not license our name to anything.
Links
No paid links in editorial text, no link exchanges, no guest posts, no contributed articles, no thought leadership, no digital public relations placements and no inserting a link into an existing article for money. Every external link on this site is marked so that it passes no ranking signal, and that is not negotiable at any price.
Reader data
We do not sell, rent, share or licence the newsletter list. Sponsors receive no reader data, not even aggregate counts by segment. There is no tracking pixel in the letter. See privacy.
Influence over the work
Nobody outside the desk chooses a subject, sees a draft, approves a headline, suggests a source or asks for a change. We do not take commissions from institutions to write about their own holdings. If a listed organisation is the subject of an article, the article discloses the listing at the point of mention.
What is left
Alphabetical labelled listings, a labelled newsletter sponsor line, and reader membership. It is a small model. It is deliberately small.
The Gazette, four times a year
One long letter a quarter: what we have been reading, what turned out to be untrue, and what is worth going to see. No selling, because we have nothing to sell you.
Sponsor lineEach issue carries one sponsor line, labelled as such and set apart from the writing. Sponsors are shown the rate card, never the copy. See the rate card.
