Cleopatra, the milk bath, and the stories that trace back to nothing
The most repeated beauty anecdote in the English language is attached to the wrong person, and the correct person is named in a source anyone can read.

There is no ancient source attesting that Cleopatra bathed in asses' milk. Pliny the Elder does describe asses' milk bathing in connection with Poppaea Sabina, the wife of Nero, roughly a century later. Several other famous claims, including belladonna eye drops for beauty and Victorian tapeworm diet products, either lack sources entirely or rest on advertising material of uncertain provenance. Some, such as arsenic complexion wafers, are genuinely documented in the advertising record.
What follows is six claims, followed backwards. The point is not to be clever at the expense of people who repeat them, since almost everyone has repeated at least one, including this magazine's editors before they went looking. The point is that the exercise is reproducible: anyone can do it, the sources are available, and the results are consistent enough to constitute a method.
One: the milk bath
The claim: Cleopatra bathed in asses' milk to preserve her skin, requiring the maintenance of a large herd for the purpose.
Follow it backwards and the trail runs through twentieth century popular books, through nineteenth century orientalist writing, and stops. There is no ancient source that says this about Cleopatra. She is one of the most written about figures of antiquity, discussed at length by hostile Roman writers who had every incentive to record extravagance, and this does not appear.
What does appear, in Pliny the Elder's Natural History, is a description of asses' milk bathing in connection with Poppaea Sabina, the wife of the emperor Nero, together with the detail of the herds maintained for it. Pliny is writing about a Roman empress roughly a century after Cleopatra's death, and he is writing disapprovingly, as he generally does about luxury.
So the practice is attested, the source is real and available in translation, and the person is wrong. This is the single most instructive case in the entire subject, because the correction is not a matter of scholarly dispute. It is a matter of reading the source.

It has been amplified by product marketing, for which Cleopatra is a far more useful name than Poppaea.
- What is actually established
- Established: Pliny the Elder describes asses' milk bathing in connection with Poppaea Sabina. Established: milk contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid with real effects on the skin surface. Not established: any connection to Cleopatra, for which no ancient source exists. Not established: any historical line of descent from ancient milk bathing to modern acid formulation, which was arrived at through twentieth century dermatological research rather than through tradition.
Two: the dissolved pearl
The claim: Cleopatra dissolved a priceless pearl in vinegar and drank it, to win a wager with Mark Antony about the most expensive meal ever eaten.
This one is different, because there is a source. Pliny tells the story. So the claim that it is a myth with no basis is itself wrong.
What is uncertain is whether it happened. Pliny is writing a century later, in a work that mixes observation, report and marvel, and the anecdote sits within a discussion of extravagance that has a clear rhetorical purpose. The chemistry is possible in principle, since calcium carbonate reacts with acetic acid, but ordinary vinegar dissolves a large pearl slowly rather than dramatically, which is the sort of practical objection that has been raised repeatedly and tested informally by more than one curious chemist.
The correct description is therefore: a story told by a Roman author about a foreign queen, within a passage about luxury, plausible in outline and not independently corroborated. That is a genuinely different status from the milk bath, and the distinction matters.
Three: belladonna in the eyes
The claim: women, usually located in Renaissance Italy or Victorian Britain, put extract of deadly nightshade in their eyes to dilate the pupils, because large pupils were considered attractive, and this is why the plant is called bella donna.
The pharmacology is real: atropine, derived from Atropa belladonna, dilates the pupil and is used clinically for exactly that purpose. The etymology is real: the name does mean beautiful lady in Italian.
What is thin is the practice. The claim is repeated everywhere and sourced almost nowhere. The etymology is offered as evidence, which is circular, since the name may derive from other associations and etymological explanations of plant names are notoriously unreliable. If the practice was widespread we would expect it in medical warnings, in satire and in the enormous surviving literature of complaint about female artifice, and it is not prominent there.
The reasonable position: possible, occasionally attested in later sources, not demonstrated as a common practice, and the etymology proves nothing.
Four: arsenic wafers
The claim: Victorian women ate arsenic wafers to achieve a pale complexion.
This one is documented, and it is a useful counterweight to the impression that everything in this field dissolves on inspection. Advertisements for arsenic complexion wafers appear in the newspaper and periodical record of the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and they can be examined in library collections. Arsenic based preparations for the complexion were sold, promoted and discussed.
The uncertainty is about scale rather than existence. Advertising establishes that a product was sold, not how many people bought it, how many took it as directed, or what the effects were in practice. The step from an advertisement to a widespread practice is exactly the step this magazine keeps flagging, and it is worth flagging even when the underlying claim is true.
Five: tapeworm diet pills
The claim: Victorian or Edwardian women swallowed tapeworm cysts as a slimming aid, marketed as sanitised tapeworms.
The image circulated online in support of this is an advertisement of uncertain provenance which has been widely reproduced without a citation to a dated publication. Contemporary medical literature does discuss the deliberate ingestion of parasites, and quack slimming products of every description were undoubtedly sold. But the specific and famous advertisement has not, so far as this magazine can establish, been traced to an issue of a named periodical on a given date, which is the minimum required to treat an image as evidence.
Status: unresolved, and reported here as unresolved rather than debunked. The claim may be true. The image usually offered to prove it is not adequate proof.
An advertisement proves that something was sold. It does not prove that anyone bought it, and it certainly does not prove that it worked.
Six: crushed beetles
The claim: red cosmetics have been made from crushed insects since antiquity, and still are.
True, and pleasingly so. Carmine, also known as cochineal and appearing on ingredient lists under its own name and index number, is derived from the cochineal insect, cultivated principally in the Americas and traded on an enormous scale from the sixteenth century onwards. Kermes, from a different scale insect, was the equivalent European red before it. Both are genuinely ancient, genuinely insect derived and genuinely still in use.
The claim that this is a secret is the only false part. It is on the label, under a permitted colourant identifier, exactly as described in the colour regulation essay.
The pattern
Six claims, four outcomes. One attached to the wrong person. One with a real but weak source. One with no source and a circular argument. One documented in advertising with uncertainty about scale. One unresolved. One entirely true and treated as scandalous only because nobody reads labels.
That distribution is representative. The lesson is not that beauty history is a swamp of invention. It is that the confidence with which a claim is repeated carries no information whatsoever about whether it is true, and that checking is both possible and quick.
